Since February 2003, Brodie was doing very well.
He
was on daily doses of Orbax (antibiotic), which roughly costs about $2 per
day.
In May of 2003, I discussed reducing Brodie's dosage with the vet
and it was recommended
that we reduce him to a schedule of 4 days on
and 3 days off.
About a week after I started reducing his Orbax, he
developed another boil type swelling between his eyes.
The vet did a did another needle aspirant and nothing
was found.
It was thought that he required a full dose of Orbax, so back
to daily doses again.
It
is now September 2004 and Brodie is doing great!
He did have a return
trip to WSU in August 2003 for surgery on a ruptured CCL.
Everyone was
real happy to see him there. Dr. Gokhale gave him a clean bill of helath
on his nasal aspergillosis.
In July 2004, I reduced Brodie's dosage of
Orbax to 4 times a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday).
He
is doing fine with that dosage. I still need to clean the mucous out of
his nose a few times a day,
but it is manageable. It is due to all the
destruction in his sinus passages.
I fcalculated that Brodie's bout
with nasal aspergillosis has now exceeded about $20,000.
Brodie
had pet insurance that covered the first $5,000 of expenses and then some
miscellaneous expenses along the way.
I still wonder how Brodie contracted
the fungal infection. Was it a foregin body? Or a compromised immune system?
I
will never know but I did learn a few things from this experience...
Never
take something minor like a runny nose for granted...
If you are
not satisfied with the diagnosis (or lack therof) that a vet makes, get
another opinion...
Do research on the interent and ask questions...
Had
I not taken Brodie in for a second opinion when I did, I truly believe he
would not have survived.
The fungus was eating away his sinus passages
and could have entered his brain.
I am so grateful to allthe doctors
that had a hand in Brodie's diagnosis and recovery.
They literally saved
his life and I am deeply indebted!!!
